Family demands truth, fears police cover-up in son’s death

The family of a 25-year-old man who was shot and killed by the Police say they fear cover-up by the police service.

Divine Akuinor is believed to have been shot and killed on Saturday in what they suspect to be a case of mistaken identity.

His family first heard of his death on Sunday at the Nungua Police Station according to the brother of the deceased, Gameli Akuinor.

Gameli told Citi News the family spoke to an officer who introduced one Mr. Arhinful, who then provided a picture of the shooting scene.

“His body was lying there with no weapon, which indicated that it was a killing that could not be justified,” Gameli observed.

But the family still has no clarity on the circumstances leading to the death of Divine, which is only heightening their suspicion of the police.

“We were only told there was a shooting in the area. Mr. Arhinful didn’t give us enough information… The conversation between the two of them [Mr. Arhinful and the other police officer] suggested that the shooting was done by a police patrol team.”

“We were not informed of circumstance that led to Divine’s death because there was no statement taken in any of the police stations that we had gone to that morning. Even at the regional command, there was no statement,” Gameli added.

Right now family says it just wants the truth and an end to the apparent reckless of police personnel.

“We want Mr. Arhinful to come out and tell us where he got the picture from. I keep mentioning his name because he sent the picture. He should tell us where he got the picture from.”

“We just want the truth in this. We don’t want a continuation of such reckless killings in Ghana. It makes the country very unsafe for us. You should come to the environment we live in now. Everyone is scared.”

This news comes as the police service is still dealing with the killing of seven men innocent men at Asawase in the Ashanti Region.

The list of the 21 police officers who have been interdicted by the Ghana Police Service for their involvement in the Asawase killings was only just revealed as the community continues in its pursuit of justice.
