The Inspector General of Police (IGP) David Asante-Apeatu has directed the Criminal Investigations Department to begin a probe into a shooting incident in which a woman was killed and two others were injured at Ankaful Junction in the Central Region on Thursday.

In a statement signed by ACP David Eklu, Head of Public Affairs, the police indicated that the investigations would take a period of three weeks after which the CID has been tasked to present a complete report on the issue to the Inspector General of Police.

“The CID has a period of three weeks to present a completed report to the IGP”,the statement added.

DSP Irene Oppong, the Central Regional Police PRO, explained that on January 10, 2019 at about 6:30, the Praso Police team had information while on patrol duties that a BMW saloon car with registration number GT. 45 23 J was being used by suspected armed robbers in an operation.

The Police, following the tip-off, pursued the suspected armed robbers and upon reaching the Police barrier at Praso and Jukwa, the robbers sped through the barricade.

“The Police further persued them to the Brimso barrier and the robbers again ignored a signal by Police Officers on duty to stop nearly knocking down a Police man in the process,” DSP Irene Oppong noted.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer for Central Region, upon reaching Ankaful junction the robbers started firing at the Police and the Police returned fire in the process.

Amidst the exchange of fire a taxi cab with registration number CR 523 -17 was caught in the crossfire, with a stray bullet hitting Mary Aboagye, 38 now deceased and her husband Aboagye Okyere, 47, years who managed to survive.

Cecilia Mensah, a 15-year-old girl who was standing by the road side waiting for a vehicle to take her to school, was also hit by a stray bullet and is currently receiving treatment at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.

“The school girl is now receiving treatment at the hospital and is responding to treatment” DSP Irene Oppong noted.

The suspected robbers vehicle however drove into a ditch and one of the robbers who was wielding a rifle managed to escape in the process.

However Police managed to arrest two of the suspects; Joseph Quansah, 36 and Daniel Ewusi, 32 who is currently on admission at the Cape Coast Teaching hospital receiving treatment.

“Upon inspection of the BMW saloon car Police found 7 live goats and 5 dead goats,” DSP Irene Oppong added.
