The Ghanaian national football team represents Ghana in men’s international tournaments. The men’s team, popularly known as the Black Stars, has been competing since the 1950s. Punters on Betway Live betting are well aware of the Black Stars’ achievements on the continental and global stage. After 63 years of independence, here is a chronology of the Ghanaian football team’s major accomplishments.

1963 – African Champions

The Black Stars won three West African titles in 1963 and made history as the first Sub-Saharan African country to win the African Cup of Nations in 1963 when they hosted the tournament. They won the cup in style by beating Sudan three goals to nil. The scorers on the final were Aggrey Fyn and Edward Acquah, who scored a brace.

The historic triumph was also a win for the first Ghanaian president Kwame Nkrumah. The president was confident that football could be the model for African pride and unity. The team captain was Aggrey Fyn, and CK Gyamgi was the head coach, assisted by Ben Kouffie.

1965 – AFCON 2nd Triumph

The Black Stars emerged winners of the 1965 AFCON tournament again. They had to overcome tournament hosts Tunisia in a dramatic final. They also made history with the win by becoming the first African country to beat the host nation in the AFCON final.

The Black Stars’ success between 1963 and 1965 can be attributed to Ohene Djan, who was the first director of sports in Ghana. The president used Ohene as an agent to promote Ghanaian football through the Real Republicans.

The Real Republicans chose two players from top Ghanaian football clubs. The selected players formed the backbone of the Black Stars squad that won the AFCON in 1965. The Black Stars of this era would be a favorite for punters on Betway.

1978 – The Black Stars Won the AFCON for Keeps

The Black Stars won the AFCON for the third time in 1978. First, they made history again by becoming the first African nation to win it thrice. Second, they kept the trophy for doing so. They beat Uganda in the finals by beating them 2-0 thanks to goals by Opoku Afriyie.

1982 – Last AFCON Triumph

Ghana won another AFCON in 1982 when they beat Libya on penalties increasing their tally in the tournament to four cups. Unfortunately, this was their last triumph in the tournament.

Since then they have finished second three times, third once and fourth four times. In the latest tournament in 2019, they were bundled out in the Round of 16.

World Cup

After trying to reach the World Cup for several years, the Black Stars made a breakthrough in 2006 under the guidance of Ratomir Djokovic. In the tournament, they also became the first African country to reach the last 16, but they could not beat the then world champions Brazil.

Four years later, they qualified for the first-ever World Cup held on African soil in South Africa. In the tournament, they equaled the record held by Senegal and Cameroon as the other African country to reach the tournament’s semis. Their performances were inspiring and raised the hopes of African football fans. Punters on Betway also thought they had found the tournament’s dark horse.

However, they were stopped by Luis Suarez’s tactical handball in injury time to deny them a goal-scoring opportunity. Captain Asamoah Gyan blasted the penalty wide, taking the African football fans’ hopes with it. They made it to the next World Cup but were eliminated in disgrace.
