An Uber driver identified as Nana, last Tuesday allegedly assaulted a passenger at Dansoman.

This followed the refusal of the passenger to pay a fare charged by the driver, which was reportedly higher than the fare generated by the ride-hailing app.

[contextly_sidebar id=”gDrOvm5VPp497QOIX2ymmJC0K9nMsNus”]The Dansoman Police station confirmed to Citi News that it is investigating the matter.

The victim is demanding justice after she claimed several attempts to get a response from Uber Ghana on the incident proved futile.

This is despite Uber, on its website saying its “specially-trained incident response teams are available around the clock to handle any urgent concerns that arise.”

The victim narrated to Citi News that “the fare on his screen was GHc9.83 so I took out money to give to him and he didn’t understand why the fare was GHc9.83. He did his calculation and I was like no, I am not going to pay you that.”

After spending close to ten minutes in the car of the driver with no headway on the matter, Nana said she decided to leave and pay the driver the GHC 9.83.

It was at this point the driver allegedly attacked her until her neighbors came to her rescue.

“I got down from the car, because I had given him the money. Immediately I got down from the car, he grabbed me from behind, and started dragging me and strangling me. He kept beating and there was no one because it was midnight. I started screaming for help and immediately he realized that people were coming out, he just went to his car and sped off,” the victim said.

Nana said she has reported the case to both the police and Uber management.

Citi News’ checks reveal that the matter is under investigation at the Dansoman Police station.

The victim accused Uber of not being responsive since the matter occured.

Meanwhile, attempts by Citi News to get an official response from Uber Ghana have been fruitless.

Uber was launched in Ghana in 2016.

In Ghana, Uber is present in the national capital Accra, and the Ashanti Regional capital, Kumasi.

When a passenger is matched with a driver, the driver’s name, license plate number, photo, and rating are made available.
