An eight-month-old baby boy who was reported missing at the Kpando Market on Thursday, July 16, has been found safe at Bowiri-Toviate in the Oti Region.
According to a police source who spoke to Akpini Radio, the infant has been taken to the Margaret Marquart Catholic Hospital in Kpando for medical examination to assess his condition.
A suspect linked to the alleged abduction is currently in police custody at the Kpando Police Command.
The Police say investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the appropriate legal action.
Authorities have not yet disclosed further details about the suspect or the circumstances that led to the child being found in the Oti Region.
The incident was reported to have occurred on Thursday, July 16, 2026, between 2:00 pm and 3:30 pm, when a woman allegedly approached a young groundnut seller at the Kpando Market with her baby strapped to her back and expressed interest in purchasing four large tins of groundnuts.
The suspect, described as fair-complexioned and believed to be in her mid-thirties, was reportedly wearing an orange top and black trousers.
The woman allegedly offered to hold the baby while the mother attended to the sale.
The mother said that after serving three large tins of groundnuts, she realised she needed additional stock to complete the order and briefly left to get more. However, when she returned, the woman and her baby were no longer at the location.
The mother, together with family members and fellow traders, conducted a search for the child, but their efforts were unsuccessful.
The matter was subsequently reported to the Kpando District Police Station, where investigations commenced.
Police sources indicate that the same woman may have attempted a similar approach with another trader earlier in the market but was unsuccessful.
The trader reportedly told police that the woman had asked to hold her child while she went to withdraw money on her behalf. The trader, however, remained cautious and directed her to Mobile Money vendors within the market instead.
