The Ministry of Interior has summoned the top hierarchy of the Immigration and Police Services following the heated confrontation between personnel of the two security agencies at Sakaman, a suburb of Accra.

Some officers from the Odorkor police command disrupted Immigration officials after an operation at Mcarthy Hills resulted in the arrest of four Nigerians suspected to be cyber-criminals.

The police were reportedly acting on a distress call claiming some soldiers were terrorizing residents.

The police took custody of the suspects after claiming they could not verify the identity of the Immigration Service personnel.

About twelve hours after the incident, the police returned three out of the four suspects who were taken from the Immigration Service custody.

Michael Amoako Atta, the PRO of the Immigration Service, said the police were yet to return the fourth suspect.

He also criticized the police personnel involved in the heated exchange as unprofessional.

“If the police had behaved professionally, things wouldn’t have gotten to the extent they did… As an inspector, you do not, in public confront a superior officer. It is rather good we handle this within our walls.”

The PRO of the Accra Regional Police, ASP Afia Tenge admitted there was a lack of coordination that led to the confrontation between the security personnel.

“There was some miscommunication. For me, what I see is that there was no coordination of the arrest,” she said on Eyewitness News.

Nonetheless, the Member of Parliament for Kumbungu, Ras Mubarak, insists that there must be a full-service inquiry.

Speaking on Citi TV’s Breakfast Daily, Ras Mubarak said even the call logs must be reviewed to ascertain the veracity of the distress call claim.

“I think that there ought to be a service inquiry. We need to go into details. The police would have to even liaise with the mobile network providers to look at the call logs and to see whether there is any amount of truth in the allegations that have been made. If it is established to be true, they have lost their place in the security service.”
