Tarkwa: Nsuta residents block road after truck killed teenager

Residents of Nsuta in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality, blocked the main Tarkwa-Takoradi road in protest after a Manganese truck knocked and killed a 15-year-old boy on Friday Morning.

[contextly_sidebar id=”NMNziWI8uywCp8pVDD9bGJBLfHRI8HAS”]Citi News’ Western Regional Correspondent, Obrempong Yaw Ampofo, spoke to a resident who said too many of such pedestrian knockdowns have been recorded on the road.

“Sometimes when you are on the road and you are bypassing them [Trucks], it is very dangerous. Sometimes you need to park somewhere for them to pass and most often when they park on the side of the road, the trucks would be there for 10 minutes to an hour and the truck will just fall off, so you can imagine if a child is behind the truck what would happen,” he said.

The resident also said the demonstration was not planned, and that it was spontaneous due to anger.

“You see this demonstration was not planned, but the youth had already spoken about a demonstration, so this death played to their advantage to go on a riot. They are still not calm because of how the police are coordinating things,” he said.

Quite a number of contractors who cart tonnes of deposits from the Nsuta mines, attribute the number of accidents on the road to the poor nature of the road.

In September 2018, some residents of Tarkwa in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality led by their chief, blocked the main Tarkwa Takoradi Highway in protest against deteriorating roads.

They blocked the road and burnt tyres in front of the AngloGold Ashanti, Iduaprim Mines.

Some portions of the Tarkwa-Takoradi Highway have been in bad shape for over three years now.
