‘Ghanaians now unsafe under Nana Addo’s weak governance’ – NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) says the weak leadership of President Akufo-Addo has led Ghana into a state of insecurity.

[contextly_sidebar id=”v7RxUKpslUFms6mvCjbbR2YYVpt9fQdg”]In a statement copied to citinewsroom.com, the NDC said the situation has resulted in the spate of heinous crimes recorded in the country lately including the murder of investigative journalist, Ahmed Hussein-Suale on Wednesday night.

The party’s General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, who signed the statement said while the party commiserates with the family of Hussein-Suale, it expects the government to urgently pursue the matter and ensure that the perpetrators of the crime are brought to book.

“This heinous crime has shaken the media fraternity in Ghana to the core and has the potential to reverse the gains we have made in the promotion of press freedom. The NDC adds its voice to the many calls by well-meaning Ghanaians on our security agencies to ensure the speedy apprehension and prosecution of the perpetrators of this cowardly act.”

The party noted that within the past months, five persons have been murdered in cold blood in what appears to be a state of “lawlessness” that has been superintended over by the Akufo-Addo government.

“[This] demonstrates failure on the part of the Akufo-Addo government to live up to its most fundamental responsibility – guaranteeing the safety and security of Ghanaians…
There is no doubt, in the wake of the recent gruesome killings that we are in an era of contract killings reminiscent of the final years of the previous NPP Administration. The impunity and nonchalance with which these murders have been carried out, point to an emboldening of the criminals behind them, which stems directly from the unacceptably weak response from government and security agencies,” the NDC said.

The party said while it believes that the Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, who incited people against the deceased over his involvement in Anas’ Number 12 Football corruption investigation must be questioned over the latter’s death, the public must be careful not to venture into “mere scapegoating of Mr. Agyapong as a ruse to cover up a potentially more sinister plots behind this killing.”

“Given the huge embarrassment the ‘Number 12’ video brought to persons at the highest levels of government, especially the exposure of a bribe collection syndicate at the Presidency helmed by President Akufo-Addo himself, we expect that any investigation into the killing of Ahmed Suale would be all-encompassing. We expect that no one, irrespective of their exalted position, would be deemed untouchable in the investigations,” the statement added.

“The rapid decent of our country into lawlessness and insecurity, characterized by these assassinations and gangster-style executions, speaks to the weak leadership of President Akufo-Addo,” the NDC said.

The statement further accused the NPP government of being incompetent in handling key issues that affect the country. It said Akufo-Addo appears clueless in addressing the many challenges confronting citizens of the country.

“He [Nana Addo] is clearly unable to get a handle on the key issues affecting the people, not least among them security. The current fragile and tenuous security situation prevailing in the country is further demonstration of the cluelessness that has defined his Presidency.”

It further urged Akufo-Addo to “put an end to his passive and aloof style of governance and adopt a more hands-on, problem-solving approach especially in the face of the upsurge in violent crimes and unexplained killings.”

It also said it was necessary for the government to fashion out a strategy to protect citizens and halt the violent killings.

Former President John Dramani Mahama had earlier called on government and security agencies in the country to work judiciously in bringing to book the assailants of Tiger Eye PI’s lead investigative journalist, Ahmed Hussein-Suale, who was killed on Wednesday allegedly by unknown assailants.
