GETFund contractors delay affecting studies – Aburi Presby SHS

The management of the Presbyterian Senior High Technical School in Aburi has said the delay of the GETFund contractor working on a 12-unit classroom block and a two-storey dormitory in the school is impacting negatively on the school.

The school with a population of 2,865 has had to convert the school’s dining and assembly halls into classrooms.

Over 400 students in the school currently do not have a desk, which has made teaching and learning a major headache for both teachers and students.

According to school authorities, efforts to reach the contractor who has abandoned the project for the past three years has proven futile.

Addressing a gathering at the school’s Founders Day lecture, the headmaster of the school, David Odjidja, indicated that the lackadaisical attitude of the contractor had worsened the burden of the school.

“Currently the school enrollment is 2,864 with 125 graduate teachers and 68 non-teaching staff, even though the form 2 students are home we are overcrowded. The school has a potential of making it and becoming the best but the high rise in students population in recent years without a corresponding increase in infrastructure gas aggravated the already bad conditions hindering teaching and learning.”

“We have inadequate classrooms as classes are being held in the school’s assembly hall, and we have also converted the whole dining hall into a classroom block. Currently, we have a deficit of 13 unit of classroom and one can imagine how academic work can be effective. We also have congestion at our dormitory especially at the boys’ side, we believe that the two GETFUND projects when completed will save the situation, but it is unfortunate that the contractor has abandoned the project and there is no way getting in touch with him.”

Mr Odjidja added that some students go to class without desks.

“We have a serious problem with furniture, as I speak now even though the 2nd year students are not here over 400 students do not have desk in the classroom, the situation becomes very bad in the evening during prep hours as students who are supposed to go for prep struggle to get furniture for their private studies”.

Mr David Odjidja also indicated that the inadequate teachers’ bungalow on campus is affecting the monitoring of the students.

” With over 2000 students in the boarding house yet the school is not properly fenced, so encroachers keep on intruding at odd hours, we do not also have staff bungalows as with the over 250 teachers only 12 are currently on campus with bungalow’s, and it is very challenging monitoring students”.

“We are however hopeful that when the above challenges are met this school will be above all the other schools”.
