In celebration of International Women’s Day, a group calling itself the Concerned Mothers Association Takoradi has called on the police to fast track the search for some three girls kidnapped in the Western Region.
“On this occasion, we are standing with the families of these girls and demanding that the police should up their game and stop pampering the main suspect. As women, we are very much worried that till now there have not been any concrete efforts to identify the whereabouts of these girls, dead or alive,” the group said in a statement issued on Friday to mark the World International Women’s Day.
The association used the opportunity to celebrate all women and men who are helping women find a balance for better living.
Even though the Gender Minister said the girls are alive, their whereabouts are currently unknown.
“We have been told that the girls are alive by the Gender Minister. If it is true then we are demanding that government should use all its security systems and apparatus to bring our girls back.”
The association is of the view that the longer government takes to resolve the kidnapping issue the more fear, insecurity and panic continue to grow amongst the women and girls in Takoradi.
“The longer this issue lingers on, the greater the feeling of insecurity and panic. As mothers, we are also feeling the pain and we know the pain families are going through. So we use this occasion to bring pressure to bear on our security to bring back our girls,” the group added in its statement.
The suspect at the centre of the kidnapping of the three girls in the Western Region, Sam Udoetuk Wills, is standing trial for escaping from police custody when he was arrested.
He had confessed that his escape was facilitated by his friend and an officer of the Criminal Investigations Department.
At the last hearing, Sam was unable to produce his witness in court.
A committee has also been set to fish out the CID officer who aided Sam to escape from police custody.
