The District Police Command of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is investigating a case where the Student Representative Council (SRC) President, Charles Adu-Baah Charles and some other executives were allegedly held hostage and assaulted on Sunday by some persons at Kotei, a community near the university.
KNUST District Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Godfred Asare, who confirmed this to Citi News said the SRC executives have identified some of the people who allegedly attacked them.
SRC President, Charles Adu-Baah said he was slapped several times by some persons he identified as Alumni of the University.
“The truth is that somewhere around 10 am on Sunday, I was attacked by some guys who are alumni of the university. They just slapped me several times on the account that they felt that, after the election I have not been able to sort them out. That is the term they have been using. We have reported to the police and KNUST security and things are being handled,” he said narrating the incident to Citi News.
Meanwhile, management of the university has called for calm and restraint among students while it resolves the issues.
A statement signed by Public Relations Officer of KNUST, Richard Amoah, said administration condemns the violence and harassment and the case has also been reported to the KNUST Police, KNUST Security Services and to the Office of the Dean of Students for investigation.
“The case has been reported to the KNUST Police Station, KNUST Security Services and progressively to the Office of Dean of Students for investigation and further action. The President and other executives assaulted are in good state currently,but under medical attention. The SRC entreats all students to remain calm as we are solving this issue for progress of the security of students on and off-campus,” he said.
Incidents of violence are a growing concern in many colleges and university campuses as pressure mounts on school authorities to put in place measures to curb this challenge.
