NPP, NDC must dialogue to reduce electoral tension in Ghana – Adam Bona

A security analyst, Adam Bona, is urging the two main political parties to dialogue to prevent the already existing tension in the country from escalating.

The police revealed in an earlier statement that five persons were killed with seventeen others injured in separate violent incidents during the just ended general elections.

Since the Electoral Commission (EC) announced the results of the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections, the main opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has raised objections and threatened to seek redress in court over what it refers to as “mismatched figures”.

Speaking to Citi News, Mr. Bona said both parties must soon come to a consensus in order to prevent any more violent acts from agitated party members.

Mr. Bona said “the EC might have made some mistakes. And I do think that the EC should correct them and make sure that things are done appropriately, if not the court will be an appropriate forum to address these issues.”

“I will urge the political parties to dialogue. The office of the Chief Imam, Christian Council, Peace Council, and other CSOs, including the media all, have roles to play to calm tensions. It is becoming a bit scary, the attacks and counter-attacks, and no one knows what will happen tomorrow. We need to take serious steps to ensure that this country does not go into conflict,” he advised.

His call comes on the back of current tension in the country following the rejection of the election results declared by the Electoral Commission.

According to the opposition National Democratic Congress, the election was flawed.

It’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama had strongly expressed the party’s unwillingness to accept the outcome of the elections.

Describing the outcome as the “real stolen verdict,” Mr. Mahama at a press conference on Thursday said the party will audit the outcomes of the poll to inform its next step.

Additionally, John Mahama has vowed that the party will do all it can to ensure that it secures majority of the country’s parliamentary seats.
