Govt must investigate alleged military brutality in Garu – Tempane MP

The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Tempane constituency in the Upper East Region, Lydia Akanvariba Adakudugu, has called on the government and leadership of the Ghana Armed Forces to investigate alleged brutalities perpetrated by some military personnel on residents of Garu.

Reports emerged on the morning of October 29 that personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces had stormed Garu to avenge attacks on some National Security operatives on October 24.

The Ministry of National Security, however, denied the allegations in a statement and explained that it was a “joint operation to seize weapons used in the October 24 attack by a vigilante group in Garu.”

In an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, the Tempane MP disagreed with the explanation given by the National Security Ministry and questioned the grounds on which the raid and subsequent brutalities were unleashed. She also intimated that the incident should not go without thorough investigations.

“Where was the National Security that they could not arrest the people and had to come to rain this brutality on the people at a later date? And where are the weapons that they came to retrieve? Were they telling us that they came to retrieve weapons and had to beat over 200 people? Can they tell us that the people they have beaten were found with weapons?”

She told Umaru Sanda Amadu that she would be making a statement on the Floor of Parliament on Tuesday on the alleged brutalities.

“We are calling for urgent investigations into this brutality, and we are calling on the National Security Minister and the leadership of the military to come out and tell us why this happened. Tomorrow, we will be going to Parliament, and we will be making a statement on the Floor of Parliament to tell Ghanaians what the military has done to our constituents. We also want the affected people to be compensated.”
