Average Kenkey size keeps reducing, with increased price – Researcher

Development Researcher and Communications Advisor, Kobina Aidoo, has observed that the weight of kenkey keeps reducing, but the prices have been going up on streets in Accra.

According to him, kenkey is quite expensive around Dzorwulu, adding that Fridays are good kenkey selling days as most people buy for their homes over the weekend.

During an interview on The Point of View, Mr. Aidoo said kenkey consumers experienced a sharp drop in the kenkey they buy between August and November 2023.

“While the selling price affects affordability, the value for money lies in the price of kenkey at a given weight. On that measure, kenkey started the year at 124 grams per Ghana cedi, a 20.5 percent drop over the preceding three months, as consumers experienced a sharp drop in their kenkey well-being through shrinkflation. The value of kenkey continued to drop another 17 percent over the first half of the year, ending at 102 grams per Ghana cedi in July. As expected, the higher the price, the heavier the kenkey.

“Kenkey sizes keep reducing, but prices keep going up. As expected, the higher the price, the heavier the kenkey. Dzorwulu is a constantly expensive area to buy kenkey. Fridays are good selling days for kenkey.”

According to him, in December 2022, kenkey shrunk by 16.9 percent over the year.

“How much kenkey does one get for each Ghana cedi? On average, 4 grams. In December 2022, that was 136.4 grams of kenkey. So, kenkey shrunk by 16.9 percent over the year,” he mentioned to Bernard Avle.

The Kenkey Index Creator emphasized that the GHC3 ball of kenkey is the best price for consumers to get value for their money, highlighting that the most affordable kenkey was in the coastal area.

“If one’s goal was to get the most kenkey for one’s money, the best bet currently is the three-cedi. But not all kenkey is created equal. The most affordable kenkey was on the coast,” he underscored.

He remarked that the heaviest ball of kenkey sold by a vendor was in Ablekuma, weighing 739 grams.

“But the absolute heaviest ball of kenkey was in Ablekuma: 739 grams, more than a big green bottle of beer in weight.”
