Former GAWU Secretary criticises govt’s lack of foresight on Northern drought

A former General Secretary of the General Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU), Edward Kareweh, has criticised the government for its lack of foresight in addressing the drought affecting the northern parts of the country.

The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, on Monday, August 26, announced a ban on the exportation of grains to ensure sufficient supply for the domestic market amid the ongoing weather challenges.

However, in an interview with Citi News, Kareweh expressed that the situation could have been avoided if the government had taken more proactive measures.

“We want to wish things away and want to have easy way of doing things. Now that the drought has come, you can see the seriousness in the eyes of the government, the ministers who spoke about what they are going to do. They will now find the money, they will do this, they will get from development partners, they will make sure that it is non-partisan and so on and so forth. We wouldn’t have gotten to where we are today. As for droughts, they always come.

“As for natural disasters, they will come but it is for that reason that we put in measures to mitigate natural disasters when they come. They have spoken so well; they have had good intentions. But again, just like in the past, policies have had good intentions. But implementation has never been good at all. We are even fortunate today that this drought only occurred in the northern part of the country. If it had come to the southern part of the country, it would have been more serious than it is now,” he stated.
