Reverend Mrs Rosemond Anaba, Director of Desert Pastures International School, has revealed that running a school in the Upper East Region presents significant challenges, primarily due to the high cost of building materials.
Speaking at the commissioning of a 16-unit pre-primary classroom block at the school’s Yikene campus in Bolgatanga, Rev Anaba bemoaned the unique struggles faced by private schools in the region which is the high cost of building materials.

She explained that construction costs in the Upper East Region are disproportionately high compared to other parts of Ghana, making infrastructure development a difficult task for school proprietors.
“In the Upper East Region, it is a daunting task running a school because up here, when it comes to building materials, you will pay like one and a half or two times the price,” Rev. Mrs. Anaba observed.
In addition to this, she noted the challenge of attracting and retaining professional teachers, a problem that impacts the smooth operation of schools in the region.
“Unlike in other parts of the country, it’s hard to find the requisite professional tutors here, which is affecting education delivery,” she said.

She was speaking during the commissioning of a state-of-the-art 16-unit pre-primary classroom block at the school’s Wisdom Campus in Yikene, Bolgatanga.
The 16-unit pre-primary classroom block is a GH₵8 million modern facility designed to provide a conducive learning environment for young children, offering essential skills and knowledge for their academic growth.
The block, which includes offices, a sick bay, and an IT centre, also boasts interactive boards, LED screens, and 2 large, air-conditioned bistros.

She explained that the growing population at the school’s then location in the Daporetidongo community necessitated the construction of the new block at Yikene.

Archbishop Charles Agyinasare, founder of Perez Chapel International and guest of honour, praised Desert Pastures for its commitment to quality education in the region despite obstacles.
Bolgatanga Municipal Chief Executive Rex Asanga, described the new facility as a “life-changing” investment in the youth, urging students to take full advantage of it.
The Bolgatanga Municipal Directorate of Education also commended Desert Pastures for its significant contributions to education in the region.
