The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, has underscored the significance of the Peace Pact signed by presidential candidates, stating that it reflects their commitment to ensuring peace among their supporters and the nation before, during, and after the 2024 general elections.
However, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had initially expressed reservations about signing the peace agreement.
The party cited a lack of thorough investigations into fatalities from the 2020 elections and the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election as a basis for their concerns.
Speaking during the signing of the Peace Pact by the various political parties, on November 28, Madam Jean Mensa said, “The signing of the Peace Pact marks an important building block in our nation’s development.
“The very act of Signing the Peace Pact is symbolic in that it signals to all supporters and Presidential Candidates that they are indeed committed to ensuring that Ghana remains intact before during and after the elections.”
“It also symbolises that the Presidential Candidates have put Ghana first, before their interests and aspirations.”
She emphasized the Commission’s commitment to preserving peace both during and following the 2024 general elections.
“As a commission, I’m pleased to note that we have walked the talk of peace.”
