The Ghana Chamber of Mines has called for unified and decisive action to address the persistent issue of illegal mining in the country.

This demand follows the recent clashes in Obuasi and past incidents in Ntotroso and Kenyase.

The violent confrontations between illegal miners and state security personnel resulted in the tragic loss of lives and multiple injuries,.

The Chamber expressed deep concern and demand a comprehensive approach to the problem.

In a statement, the Chamber extended its condolences to the bereaved families and communities affected by the incidents.

Dr. Sulemanu Koney, CEO of the Chamber, strongly condemned the illegal activities, describing them as a grave threat to lives, the environment and the integrity of Ghana’s mining sector.

“Illegal mining compromises safety, damages the environment, and undermines the sustainability of the industry that plays a vital role in our national development,” Dr. Koney remarked.

“It is time for all stakeholders to come together to address this issue holistically”, he added.

The Chamber acknowledged the government’s ongoing efforts to curb illegal mining and restore order.

However, it emphasised the need for a multi-stakeholder strategy involving government agencies, civil society organisations, traditional authorities and local communities to tackle the root causes of illegal mining.

The Chamber also highlighted the strategic importance of the mining sector which contributes significantly to Ghana’s economy.

“Protecting investments and ensuring public safety are critical not only for the sector’s growth but also for the welfare of the communities in mining areas.

The statement concluded with a call for calm and restraint in the affected regions, as well as a renewed commitment to promoting sustainable mining practices.

The Chamber pledged its readiness to collaborate with all relevant parties to ensure a harmonious and sustainable future for Ghana’s mining sector.

The Ghana Chamber of Mines serves as the representative body of mining companies in Ghana, advocating for responsible and sustainable mineral exploration, production and processing.
