The North East Regional Minister, Ibrahim Tia, has confirmed that security forces are investigating an attack on the Nanik community in the Bunkpurugu-Yunyoo district.

The assault, which claimed three lives, is believed to be linked to ongoing chieftaincy disputes between rival clans in the area.

The attack occurred on Friday morning when assailants raided the community, setting several houses ablaze. Among the victims was a Mamprusi man, a teacher in the Nanik community, who was asleep when his house was torched. Trapped inside, he was burned beyond recognition.

Speaking on Channel One Newsroom, Minister Tia stated, “We know that it’s an attack and not a reprisal because we just know that Nanik community was attacked..”

He also acknowledged existing tensions, noting, “When I assumed office I heard there were some chieftaincy disputes between some clans in that area and I think that is what led to the fight. They are Bimobas.”

The minister assured the public that security forces have been deployed to the area to restore peace and prevent further violence.

“The security is in control. They have deployed some security men who are in between the two communities to ensure that there is peace and stability. The security is investigating the matter on the ground and I think we will get to the bottom of it and then possibly arrest the perpetrators,” he added.

Ibrahim Tia emphasized that while security agencies will address the criminal aspects of the attack, the chieftaincy dispute itself will be handled by the overlord and the regional house of chiefs.
