The government is set to implement stringent measures to shield the economy from the adverse effects of illegal mining, which has significantly impacted national revenue.
In 2023, the mining sector contributed a record GHS 11.55 billion in taxes—an 81.1% increase from GHS 6.38 billion in 2022—making it the largest source of domestic tax revenue.
Speaking at a briefing with news editors in Accra, Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, announced plans to introduce technology-driven tracking systems to monitor excavator operations in mining areas.
“We’ve started engaging chiefs as part of stakeholder efforts. We believe technology must play a key role in monitoring mining activities. A dedicated technology sector has been established to track operations and ensure compliance,” he stated.
The minister also hinted at expanding surveillance technology to forest reserves, though he acknowledged the high costs involved.
The government remains committed to scaling up efforts to combat illegal mining while ensuring sustainable economic benefits from the sector.
