The Eastern South Command of the Ghana Police Service has condemned the unfortunate accident which claimed 11 lives at Amanase in the Suhum Municipality of the Eastern Region on the main Accra-Kumasi Highway this morning.
DCOP Ohene Boadi Bossman, who revealed that there was no tyre burst from the fuel tanker, indicated the possibility of the driver sleeping while driving, leading to his truck veering off and crossing over to the other carriage, crushing the Sprinter bus.
The Eastern South Police Commander, DCOP Ohene Boadi Bossman, spoke to the media when the Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Awatey, visited the accident scene.
“When we got here, we saw that the tanker driver from Kumasi veered road and collided with a sprinter, and after we got to the scene, we saw that 11 people died and 14 are seriously injured and have been sent to the Suhum hospital for treatment,” he disclosed.
On her part, the Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Awatey, who commiserated with the families of the deceased, called on drivers, vehicle owners and transport operators to ensure that their drivers get enough rest and desist from driving tired.

“We have seen that it could be that the driver was tired. We just want to let people know that if you are driving and you feel tired, just find somewhere and rest for a while. I think maybe after this easter they should have allowed the drivers to rest. We will make sure we give occasional briefings to our drivers that if they are tired, they need to rest,” she stated.
