Tensions rise as Ayawaso West Assembly rejects Mahama’s MCE nominee

Tempers flared at the Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, as members voted against President John Dramani Mahama’s nominee for Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Michael Mensah.

In a vote that attracted considerable public and political interest, Mensah garnered only 9 out of the 19 votes cast, falling short of the two-thirds majority required for his confirmation.

The atmosphere in the Assembly Hall was tense, reflecting sharp divisions among the members, with some openly voicing their disapproval of the nomination.

Verbal clashes reportedly broke out between supporters and opponents of the nominee, underscoring deeper political disagreements within the assembly.

Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, appealed to the assembly members to endorse the President’s nominee, emphasizing that critical regional initiatives are being held up by the delay.

“We have a lot of things to do, so we only have to plead with the assembly members to confirm the president’s nominee. They should look at the fact that if they don’t approve, they will come back to you, that is all we are trying to avoid,” she stated.

With the rejection of Mensah’s nomination, the MCE position remains vacant for now, pending a possible renomination or the appointment of a new candidate by the Presidency.
