TTH resumes full operations after doctors suspend strike

The Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) has resumed full medical services following the suspension of a strike action by its doctors.

Normal activities at the facility, which had been disrupted, since April 23, 2025, by the industrial action, have come back to full scale after the doctors called off their strike.

The decision to suspend the protest, followed a meeting with the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, on Friday, April 25, 2025.

The strike follows a tense incident during an unannounced visit by the Health Minister and Tamale North MP, which reportedly resulted in a heated verbal altercation with Dr. Valentine Akwulpwa, Head of the Accident and Emergency Unit.

In response, doctors at TTH suspended emergency and outpatient services indefinitely, citing “unwarranted attacks” on their colleagues.

They have since demanded formal apologies for Dr. Akwulpwa and all emergency department personnel, stating they will not return to work until their concerns are addressed.

On Friday, April 25, a high-powered delegation from the palace of the Yaa Naa Abukari II, intervened for the doctors to suspend the strike. However, only the accident and emergency department resumed operations after the delegations from the Yaa Naa’s palace.

But, after a meeting with the minister, a statement from the leadership of the doctors association asked the members of the hospital to suspend the strike and resume work with immediate effect.

“The DATTH calls off the suspension of services and calls on all doctors to resume all services with immediate effect at Tamale Teaching Hospital,”
