As part of the project titled “Expanding Open Climate Education to Schools for Persons with Disabilities,” a team of climate educators and open education advocates from Eco Warriors Movement visited the Garden City Special School in Kumasi to engage students and teachers in an inclusive climate change workshop.
The initiative, which builds on Eco Warriors Movement’s national Open Climate Education for High Schools programme, is focused on adapting Open Educational Resources (OER) to meet the unique learning needs of persons with disabilities and special students. With this recent outreach, the project is taking a bold step to ensure that no student is left behind in the global climate conversation.
The interactive workshop was attended by 32 students and 5 teachers, and focused on using pictures, visuals, and simplified explanations to introduce key concepts around climate change, its causes, and its effects. The team used specially adapted OER materials, including open friendly resources and visual aids, to effectively communicate with the students.
“The energy and participation from the students were simply inspiring,” said Daniel Kwame Oware, the team lever. “Their curiosity and eagerness to learn about the environment showed us just how important it is to design climate education that is inclusive and accessible.” – Otuo-Akyampong Boakye, President Eco Warriors Movement.
Teachers at the school also expressed their appreciation for the training and exposure. “This was eye-opening,” a participating teacher shared. “Now we have new ways to integrate climate topics into our lessons in a way that resonates with our students.”
The project also aims to train at least 30 educators and facilitators across special schools in Ghana, equip them with inclusive OER materials, and deploy Kwix technology to address internet access challenges in remote schools.
As the climate crisis grows, so does the need for informed youth—and this project ensures that youth with disabilities are empowered to join the fight. That project is powered by Creative Commons and implemented by Eco Warriors Movement.
