President John Dramani Mahama has once again commended the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) for reducing transport fares, describing the move as a welcomed relief for Ghanaians amid signs of economic improvement.

The fare reduction, which took effect on Saturday, May 24, comes as the cedi stabilises and inflation begins to decline.

Addressing students and staff during his Thank You Tour at the College of Health in Kintampo in the Bono East Region on Thursday, May 29, President Mahama expressed appreciation to transport operators for responding to the improving economic environment.

“Our currency, the cedi, is stabilising, inflation is gradually declining, investors’ confidence in our economy is returning.

“Ghanaians are beginning to feel a slow but steady relief when they go to the market… I want to take this opportunity to thank the GPRTU and the various drivers’ unions for reducing transport fares to bring relief to Ghanaians from the hardships they were facing,” he stated.

While some drivers have complied with the GPRTU’s directive to reduce fares, others have failed to do so, resulting in confusion among passengers and drivers on some commercial routes.

The GPRTU has urged all members to comply fully with the new fare structure to ensure uniformity and ease tensions among commuters.
