Thousands on Monday, May 12, gathered at Asante Mampong to observe the one-week commemoration of the late Asante Mamponghene, Bretuo Piesie Daasebre Osei Bonsu II.

Among the dignitaries in attendance were former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the Paramount Chief of the Kumawu Traditional Area, Barima Sarfo Tweneboah Koduah, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, as well as other politicians, traditional leaders, and local residents.

On April 28, the Bretuo family and the Asante Mampong Traditional Council officially informed the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, of the passing of Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, in line with Ashanti customary rites.

Subsequently, on May 5, Otumfuo directed the Asante Mamponghemaa, Nana Agyakoma Difie II, to proceed with burial arrangements within the coming weeks.

He instructed that the one-week observation of the Paramount Chief—considered second-in-command of Asanteman—be held on Monday, May 12, stressing that there should be no delay in the burial (Doteyie) preparations.

Daasebre Osei Bonsu II passed away weeks ago after a short illness.

Before ascending the Mampong stool, Daasebre served as the Registrar of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi and practised as a lawyer.
