The Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has imposed an immediate ban on the use of motorbikes after 7:00 pm in parts of the region, including the Asokore Mampong Municipality and the Kumasi Metropolis, following the fatal shooting of Alhaji Abdul-Malik Azenbge, Chief of Kusaase.
The directive, announced by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, was contained in a statement issued on Friday, July 25, 2025. It forms part of a raft of emergency security measures aimed at restoring calm after the tragic incident at Asawase on Tuesday, July 22.
According to the Regional Minister, REGSEC convened an emergency meeting on Wednesday, July 23, to assess the volatile situation and implement immediate steps to safeguard the region. The meeting came in response to rising tensions following the killing of the respected traditional leader, which has shaken the local community.
In addition to the nighttime motorbike curfew, REGSEC announced a strict prohibition on the use of unlicensed motorbikes and those without proper lighting. Riders are also barred from wearing smocks, a garment the council says is increasingly being used to conceal weapons.
The council also suspended the ongoing intertribal football competition indefinitely, citing rising inter-ethnic tensions and the need to avoid further escalation. Security agencies, including the Police and Military, will now maintain a stronger presence in identified hotspots to prevent reprisal attacks and ensure law and order.
Dr. Amoakohene, speaking on behalf of the Ashanti Regional Co-ordinating Council, extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Alhaji Abdul-Malik Azenbge, assuring residents of the government’s determination to pursue justice for the slain chief.
REGSEC reiterated its commitment to ensuring lasting peace in the region, urging calm and cooperation from residents as security operations intensify.
