Komenda Traditional Council urges gov’t to revive sugar factory

The Komenda Traditional Council has appealed to the government to urgently implement key development projects within the region, with a strong focus on job creation and infrastructure improvement.

At the forefront of this appeal is a call for the revival of operations at the Komenda Sugar Development Company Limited, popularly known as the Komenda Sugar Factory.

Addressing the issue during a courtesy visit by Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang on Sunday, July 27, the Paramount Chief of Komenda, Okatakyie Komeh VIII, stressed the pressing need for employment opportunities for the youth, citing the factory’s potential to stimulate economic growth and provide sustainable livelihoods.

“I always feel shy to look at the state of the sugar factory whenever I am passing by. The amount of money invested in the factory’s establishment must not go to waste because it is for us all. For the youth to gain strength and jobs to do, we plead with you to fix the Komenda factory and the road,” he said.

The Chief further urged the government to expedite the rehabilitation of the area’s deteriorating road network, describing poor infrastructure as a major barrier to development and access to economic opportunities.

In addition to industrial and infrastructure concerns, Okatakyie Komeh VIII also raised issues within the education and fisheries sectors. He appealed for the renovation of facilities at the Komenda College of Education and called for the provision of a new bus to ease student transportation challenges.

He also advocated for improved and safer working conditions for fisherfolk, who form a significant portion of the local workforce.
