The Member of Parliament for Navrongo Central, Simon Akibange Aworigo, has called on the government to introduce a points-based driving licence system in Ghana as part of efforts to curb reckless driving and enhance road safety.
Under the proposed system, he explained that drivers would start with a fixed number of points on their licences.
Points would be deducted for serious traffic offences such as drunk driving, running red lights, or excessive speeding.
Drivers who exhaust their points would face suspension or revocation of their licences, while severe offences could result in immediate licence seizure and driving bans of up to three years.
Speaking to Citi News on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, Mr. Aworigo argued that existing penalties are not strong enough to deter dangerous driving habits, adding that similar systems in countries like the UK have significantly reduced road accidents.
“We are not punishing people enough. In most countries, once you cross a red light, you know points will be taken off your licence. We should adopt such measures so that anyone caught in severe offences like drunk driving or extreme speeding can have their licence seized immediately and be banned from driving for years if necessary,” he said.
The MP stressed that while strict enforcement by authorities is crucial, road users must also take personal responsibility for their safety and that of others.
