The Ministry of Health has intensified efforts to secure vaccines to contain the rising spread of Mpox in Ghana, following a recent spike in confirmed cases and the country’s first recorded death from the disease.

Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh announced the move on Monday, August 4, during a brief ceremony to receive a consignment of medical supplies from representatives of the World Health Organisation (WHO). The supplies are expected to bolster the country’s Mpox response efforts.
The Ghana Health Service (GHS) on Sunday, August 3, confirmed 20 new Mpox cases, raising the national tally to 302 as of July 30, 2025. This follows the death of one patient, announced on July 22, Ghana’s first fatality linked to the virus.

In his remarks, Akandoh expressed appreciation to development partners for their support and made a direct appeal for expedited action on the Ministry’s vaccine request.
“We want to appeal to you to expedite action on our request so that we get the vaccines, and then we will use the vaccines as part of our response. It hasn’t been easy. Let me commend our health workers, the National Rapid Response Team, the regional rapid response team, and the district rapid response team.

“They have fought hard. We will try our best to contain the disease. Let us be careful and take the precautions very seriously,” he said.
