The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has stated that the National Film Authority will be temporarily relocated following a fire outbreak that caused extensive damage to the Accra Tourist Information Centre on Monday, August 4.

The blaze, which broke out around 12:30 am today, has severely damaged multiple properties, including the offices of the International Affairs Department, the Ghana Tourism Authority’s Call Center, the Tour Operators Association of Ghana, and the National Film Authority (NFA).

Addressing journalists on Monday, August 4, the minister explained that the move is to ensure the Authority’s operations continue smoothly as officials assess the situation and determine the next steps.

The Minister noted that she has engaged with musician and entrepreneur, Reggie Rockstone, who operates Rockz Waakye, as well as other affected tenants.

She also urged home and business owners to obtain fire safety certification and insure their properties to safeguard against future risks.

“A huge impact, not just for the Ministry, it’s also for all the tenants in the place. I went there this morning, my heart was broken because sometimes we have meetings there as a ministry. It was devastating to see that the place is no longer habitable.

She said, “But the good news is that no casualties, everybody is safe. I spoke with Reggie Rockstone and his wife, and some tenants who have office spaces there. They have lost quite a lot. I’m making plans to move the office of the National Film Authority to another agency to temporarily house there till we’re able to figure out what to do. The damage is extensive.”

Fire gutted the Accra Tourist Information Centre, prompting a swift response from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).

While the exact time of the incident is yet to be confirmed, a video shared on the Facebook page of the Director of Diaspora Affairs at the Office of the President, Kofi Okyere-Darko (KOD), showed thick plumes of smoke rising from the facility and visible panic among visitors and nearby workers.

The extent of the damage remains unclear at this time. A full report from the Ghana National Fire Service is expected soon.

Musician and entrepreneur Reggie Rockstone’s Rockz Waakye was part of the facilities that were affected.
