We'll retain Akwatia seat to honour Ernest Kumi

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed confidence in retaining the Akwatia parliamentary seat in the upcoming by-election.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Akwatia Watch programme on Thursday, August 28, Kwame Owiredu, spokesperson for the party’s campaign team in the constituency highlighted the party’s resolve to secure victory while honouring the legacy of the late Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi, whose passing necessitated the by-election.

“It is vibrating for the NPP. The NPP is poised to retain the Akwatia seat. Even though we are mourning our late MP Hon Ernest Kumi, we are still poised and determined to keep the seat and the grounds bear witness to this assertion,” he said.

Owiredu added that there is a strong sense of assurance among both party supporters and the local community about the NPP’s chances.

“Almost everybody is saying we are retaining the seat in Akwatia, and it is very important because this particular vote is a vote to vindicate and honour the name of Ernest Yaw Kumi,” he stated.

The by-election, slated for September 2, is considered a critical test of the NPP’s strength in the Eastern Region and an opportunity to sustain its parliamentary presence following the loss of Kumi.

Meanwhile, the Eastern Regional Deputy Youth Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Nathaniel Tetteh, has dismissed the NPP’s campaign, describing it as “gasping for breath” ahead of the polls.

He argued that the ruling party lacks a concrete plan or positive message for the people of Akwatia, claiming it is relying solely on constant references to the late Ernest Kumi.
