Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Wontumi, has rejected suggestions that he maligned the party’s National Council in his recent engagements with the grassroots.
This comes after NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong issued a statement urging party stakeholders to disregard pronouncements made by Wontumi and Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe (Abronye DC), stressing that no individual has unilateral control over the party’s processes, including the compilation of polling station albums or the timing of the presidential primaries.
But in a statement issued on Sunday, September 28, 2025, Wontumi said the General Secretary’s comments painted him unfairly as an antagonist of the party.
“Throughout my engagement with people, I have never dragged in the name of our National Council and that is easily verifiable from videos shared online. For the avoidance of doubt, I touched on the history of our party and how it can position us to win back power in 2028 with Dr. Bawumia,” he explained.
Wontumi cited historical precedents, recalling how former President John Agyekum Kufuor overcame setbacks after the 1996 primaries to eventually win power in 2000. He argued that, like Kufuor, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia needed only a modest margin to secure victory in 2028.
“To link this to our current situation, Dr. Bawumia is looking for 9% to win the NPP the 2028 election,” he stated.
The Ashanti Regional Chairman stressed that his position places him closer to the grassroots and that his comments merely reflected feedback from party supporters on how the NPP could strategise for a comeback.
“The National Council of the NPP never featured in any of the statements I made to the people,” he insisted, adding that it was “unfortunate” that the General Secretary had, in his view, fallen for propaganda designed to twist his remarks.
Wontumi further urged party leadership to properly verify his statements before issuing official responses, warning that in an era where “saboteurs can easily use tools such as AI to destroy good people,” misrepresentation could harm unity in the party.
