The Ministry of Education has lauded the University for Development Studies (UDS) football team for making history as the first African university to win the prestigious World University Games football trophy.
The University for Development Studies (UDS) has etched its name in history after defeating defending champions Paulista University of Brazil 2–1 in extra time to win the 2025 FISU World University Football Cup.
The hard-fought triumph crowns a remarkable campaign for the Ghanaian side, who displayed grit, resilience, and determination from the group stages through to the nerve-racking knockouts, proving their quality on the global stage.
In a statement issued on Sunday, September 28, 2025, the ministry described UDS’s triumph in Dalian, China, as a landmark achievement that reflects the values of discipline, resilience, teamwork, and excellence.
“The gallant UDS team has shown that with unity of purpose and unwavering determination, great heights can be attained. Every pass, every goal, and every sacrifice on the field reflected not only your pursuit of victory but also the spirit of Ghana and the enduring character of our people,” the ministry said.
The Ministry emphasised that UDS’s victory not only brings pride to Ghana but also elevates the image of Africa on the global stage. It added that the success serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration to young people, demonstrating that perseverance and vision can break barriers and set new standards of excellence.
“As the first African university to win this prestigious global trophy, UDS has not only brought glory to Ghana but has also elevated the image of Africa on the world stage. This triumph serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration to young people everywhere,” the statement read.
