Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has clarified that his past criticism of the Akufo-Addo administration’s handling of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, was based on a specific timing.
The Minister had earlier suggested that any serious President could resolve the galamsey menace within a week, a remark that sparked debate about the effectiveness of successive governments in dealing with the issue.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Point of View on Monday, September 29, 2025, Mr. George explained that his comments were made after nearly eight years of the Akufo-Addo government’s efforts, which, in his view, should have yielded better results.
“Everything is put in a context. I made those posts almost 8 years into Akufo-Addo’s administration. They had galamsey operations; they had set up committees. So I thought that with all of that work in almost eight years, where he had gotten to, he ought to have been able to fix it. So, it was in that context,” he explained.
The Minister’s clarification comes amid renewed criticism of the Mahama government over its own struggles to curb illegal mining.
