Former Minister of Information, Fritz Baffour, has described the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, as a determined and strong-willed individual whose personality traits were evident from childhood.
Speaking in tribute to her life and legacy on Channel One TV’s The Point of View on Wednesday, October 29, Mr. Baffour recalled that Nana Konadu’s confidence and assertiveness were qualities she possessed from an early age and maintained throughout her life.
“She never changed. She was something else — very forceful, very strong-willed. She had strong opinions,” he said.
The Former Minister of Information also shed light on the distinguished family background of the late former First Lady, describing her as a royal and a descendant of a wealthy cocoa magnate.
“She is a royal. Yes, [she was born to a well-to-do family]. Her grandfather was a cocoa magnate. At the time before COCOBOD became the sole purchaser for cocoa beans and things like that, he was a cocoa magnate and he actually travelled all the way to America to sell his cocoa beans, and they went by boat — there were no planes,” Mr. Baffour said.
Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings passed away on October 23 while receiving treatment at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital.
President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the former First Lady will be given a state burial in recognition of her exceptional service to Ghana. Nana Konadu, wife of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, was widely celebrated for her leadership of the 31st December Women’s Movement, which championed women’s rights and social development across the country.
President Mahama described her as a national icon whose legacy in advancing women’s empowerment remains visible throughout Ghana.
“She took women’s empowerment as her focus. When you go around the country, you see evidence of her work,” he said during a visit to the Rawlings family in Accra on October 28.
