The Attorney-General’s Department has disclosed that it will rely on four witnesses in the ongoing prosecution of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, who is facing trial over alleged illegal mining activities on the Samreboi concession.
Chairman Wontumi is accused of allowing mining operations on his concession without the necessary authorisation.
A scheduled case management conference on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, could not proceed after circumstances in court led to an adjournment.
Earlier in the day, the prosecution served additional disclosures on the defense team, prompting defense counsel Andy Appiah-Kubi to request more time to review the new documents.
During proceedings, the court sought clarification from the state regarding the number of witnesses expected to testify.
Prosecutors initially indicated that five witnesses would be called, but after Mr. Appiah-Kubi informed the court that he had received only four witness statements, the prosecution revised its position, confirming that four witnesses would be relied upon.
Presiding judge Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay subsequently adjourned the case to November 27 for the case management conference.
Speaking to the media after proceedings, Mr. Appiah-Kubi said the defense team welcomed the court’s decision to grant more time to review the prosecution’s new disclosures.
He expressed confidence that his client would be vindicated once the trial begins in earnest.
The case has attracted significant public interest due to Mr. Bosiako’s political profile and ongoing national debates about illegal mining, known locally as galamsey.
