Chief Justice nominee, Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, has pledged to strengthen the Judiciary’s monitoring mechanisms to help clear the backlog of cases pending before the courts.
Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, November 10, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie acknowledged that delays in the justice delivery system remain a major concern, attributing part of the problem to human factors, including tactics by lawyers that prolong proceedings.
“As for the cases that have been locked, what we can do is to track them. We have a monitoring team, which I am going to reinforce so that it can properly track backlog cases and determine what should be done about them.
“Lawyers play all kinds of games to have cases delayed and adjourned, so there is a human element to this. Strengthening the monitoring process will help reduce the backlog,” he stated. “
The nominee emphasised that his administration, if confirmed, would focus on transparency, efficiency, and accountability across all levels of the judicial system. He stressed that justice must not be a privilege for the powerful or wealthy but a right accessible to every Ghanaian.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie further assured the committee of his commitment to restoring public confidence in the Judiciary by ensuring fair, impartial, and timely adjudication of cases.
