FirstBank Ghana has officially commissioned the FirstBank Hotspot Comfort Zone at the University of Ghana, Legon, an initiative aimed at enhancing the academic experience, wellbeing, and digital readiness of students.
The commissioning was led by the Group Chief Executive Officer of FirstBank, Mr. Olusegun Alebiosu, as part of his working visit to Ghana. He was accompanied by Mr. Osahon Ogieva, Deputy Managing Director of FirstBank Ghana, Ms. Rosie Ebe-Arthur and Mr. Victor Yaw Asante, Managing Director/CEO of FirstBank Ghana.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Alebiosu noted that the facility reflects FirstBank’s long-standing commitment to supporting youth development and strengthening the communities in which it operates.
According to him, “At FirstBank, we see challenges facing students not as obstacles but as opportunities to provide solutions that improve lives. The FirstBank Hotspot Comfort Zone is our contribution toward a more conducive learning environment, one that promotes collaboration, comfort, digital access, and academic excellence. Our investment here underscores a fundamental belief at FirstBank empowering young people is the most strategic investment we can make in Africa’s future. We are proud to partner with the University of Ghana in advancing this vision.”
Mr. Alebiosu commended University leadership for their commitment to student welfare, adding that the project aligns strongly with FirstBank’s mission of enabling growth, fostering innovation, and driving sustainable development across Africa.
The Hotspot Comfort Zone, located near the Athletics Oval and adjacent to the Alumni Comfort Zone, is fully equipped with high-speed internet, comfortable seating areas, charging points, modern washrooms, and an upcoming snack bar. It is designed to support students who commute long distances, as well as those who need a safe and convenient place to study or rest between lectures.
With the University of Ghana’s student population having expanded significantly from fewer than 6,000 students three decades ago to over 60,000 today, the need for modern student support infrastructure has become urgent. The facility addresses pressing issues of limited accommodation, inadequate study spaces, and the need for reliable connectivity.
Professor Gordon Awandare, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Academic and Students Affairs, praised the collaboration and highlighted the significance of the project saying, “The Comfort Zone is a modern learning space where students can study, hold group discussions, or relax between lectures. Equipped with high-speed internet and essential facilities, it enhances the student experience on campus. This is the third pillar of our student experience programme, together with the One Student, One Laptop Initiative and the Classroom Modernisation Project. We are grateful to FirstBank for this partnership and urge other organisations to follow their example. Supporting the University of Ghana is not just philanthropy, our brand is strong, and partnering with us strengthens your business.”
Mr. Alebiosu reaffirmed that FirstBank will continue to pursue initiatives that empower students, deepen financial inclusion, and support national development objectives.
