Security personnel clashed with residents of unauthorised structures in the Agbogbloshi market area, a suburb of Nkawkaw in the Kwahu West Municipality, during a demolition exercise.
The operation was approved by the Municipal Security Council following the recent killing of a well-known Kwahu-Nkawkaw-based musician.
On Thursday, November 6, the Nkawkaw Divisional Police Commander led a crackdown that saw 17 individuals arrested for operating in makeshift ghettos in preparation for the demolition.
Owners of the unauthorised structures had earlier resisted the action, claiming the notice given was insufficient to remove their belongings. They were advised to visit the municipal assembly for further guidance.
Speaking to Citi News, the Assemblyman for the area, Kwaku Mensah Arthur, stressed that the demolition is in the best interest of residents.
He called for calm and assured that the assembly is ready to support those affected.
“Everybody should come down. The assembly will support the property owners. We’re doing everything according to the law,” he said.
