Assembly Members of the Asutifi North District have announced plans to demonstrate on January 20 against Newmont Gold Ghana over the poor quality of a road project in the area.
The Presiding Member of the Assembly and Dean of Presiding Members in the Ahafo Region, Nnuro Ameyaw, told Citi News that the Assembly will only accept an asphalt road under Newmont’s corporate social responsibility obligations.
According to him, the company has blamed budget limitations, but the Assembly insists that only a durable asphalt road will serve communities affected by mining activities.
The road project affects Kenyasi No.1, Kenyasi No.2, Ntotroso, Gyedu and Womahinso.
Nnuro Ameyaw said the Assembly has proposed reducing the scope of the project to allow for asphalt construction, warning that the planned demonstration will proceed if their demands are ignored.
“We have worked with Newmont Gold Ghana for about 20 years, but we are unhappy with the company’s plan to construct a double-seal road instead of an asphalt road. They claim they have budgeted for the double seal but not for the asphalt. We are organizing a demonstration against Newmont on the 20th of this month. If they do not respond to our concerns” he said
