Ghana approves passport for American streamer IShowSpeed

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has officially approved the issuance of a Ghanaian passport to American streaming sensation Darren Watkins Jr., popularly known as IShowSpeed.

The announcement follows the streamer’s high-octane “Speed Does Africa” tour, which culminated in a massive “homecoming” in Ghana on Monday, January 26.

The decision was confirmed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who praised the YouTuber for his authentic connection to the nation and his role in elevating the African continent on the global stage.

Writing on his official Facebook page, Hon. Ablakwa noted that the decision came after discussions with influential Ghanaian creator WodeMaya and a verification of Speed’s personal ties to the country.

“Following our discussions and subsequent confirmation of the irrefutable ties of IShowSpeed to Ghana, I am pleased to inform you and our compatriots that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has approved the issuance of a Ghanaian Passport to IShowSpeed,” the Minister stated.

The Minister further extended his gratitude to both Speed and Wode Maya—who was granted a diplomatic passport in 2025—recognizing them as “worthy ambassadors” of the Ghanaian spirit. “Keep making our great nation Ghana, and our beloved African continent proud,” he added.

The passport issuance is the ultimate seal on a visit that captured the world’s attention. During his stay, Speed was traditionally enstooled in Akropong, receiving the name Barima Kofi Akuffo during a spiritual naming ceremony.

From the serene Asenema Waterfalls to the roaring crowds and supercar drifting at Independence Square, Speed’s visit was more than a content trip; it was a cultural immersion.

He embraced local traditions, sampled Ghanaian Jollof, and engaged with popular Ghanaians such as Dancegodlloyd and Bukom Banku.
