Ghana Black Stars’ defender Mohammed Salisu has suffered an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury and is set to miss the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to reports by GetFrenchFootball.
The injury occurred during AS Monaco’s 3-1 defeat to Olympique Lyon in the French Ligue 1 over the weekend.
Salisu was one of three Monaco players who picked up injuries in the match.
The 26-year-old completed the full 90 minutes against Lyon but sustained the injury in the course of the game, effectively ruling him out of contention for this year’s World Cup.
Salisu had been enjoying his best run of form this season after a difficult start to the 2025–2026 campaign, which was marked by injuries and limited playing time. He has made 18 appearances in all competitions for Monaco this season.
The defender featured for Ghana at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and was widely expected to play at his second World Cup, having established himself as one of Ghana’s most consistent performers based abroad.
Ghana has been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama. The Black Stars are scheduled to play two of their group matches in the United States, with their fixture against Panama set to be played in Canada.
Salisu’s injury adds to a growing list of Black Stars players who have suffered ACL injuries in recent years. Lyon’s Ernest Nuamah, Leicester City winger Abdul Fatawu Issahaku and SC Freiburg’s Daniel Kofi Kyereh have all sustained similar injuries.
