Flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ing. Kwabena Agyepong, has pledged to abolish the mandatory retirement age of 70 for Supreme Court judges if he is elected to lead the party and eventually becomes President of Ghana.

He made the pledge on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, while unveiling his six-pillar policy vision ahead of the NPP’s presidential primaries.

According to Mr. Agyepong, the proposal is part of broader judicial reforms aimed at strengthening the independence of the judiciary.

“I will undertake stakeholder consultations to introduce a cap of 11 judges on our Supreme Court and abolish the retirement age of 70,” he said. “This will allow the Supreme Court judges to serve until they’re medically unable to perform their functions.”

He argued that the policy would limit the influence of sitting presidents over the composition of the Supreme Court.

“I believe this policy will reduce the opportunity Presidents have to pack the Apex Court with their favourites and restore true independence of our judiciary,” Mr. Agyepong added.

The New Patriotic Party is scheduled to elect its presidential candidate for the 2028 general elections on January 31, 2026.
