Kwabena Agyepong: Red lines have been crossed in NPP race

Flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyepong, has cautioned fellow contenders and their supporters to avoid personal attacks as the party delegates vote in Saturday’s presidential primary to select a flagbearer.

According to him, excessive hostility could undermine the party’s unity and public image.

His comments come amid growing public concerns that the 2026 NPP campaign has become one of the most acrimonious in recent years, following what many have described as sustained attacks and counter-attacks among camps of some of the candidates.

Speaking to Channel One TV’s Hanson Agyemang at the NPP headquarters on January 31, 2026, the former General Secretary of the party said certain boundaries had already been breached.

“I think that some red lines have been crossed. There are five of us contesting. At the end of the day, only one person will be elected; five cannot go into one,” Mr Agyapong said.

He urged party actors to conduct themselves with restraint and respect, stressing that intemperate language could have long-term consequences for the party.

“So people have to be very decorous, civil, and careful about what they say about others. At the end of the day, you don’t know who will win; we are all hoping that the winner is us,” he stated.

Mr Agyepong further noted that the ultimate objective of the primaries should be to present a candidate capable of uniting the party and appealing to the broader Ghanaian electorate.

“After we win, we should be able to represent our party well to earn the respect and the confidence of the Ghanaian people,” he said.

He questioned how the party would effectively campaign if internal rivalries degenerated into personal vilification.

“If you have lambasted and said things that are unprintable about your fellow, how do we then go and sell the person?” Mr Agyepong added.
