Ablekuma West Municipal Assembly has begun the distribution of Nkoko Nkitinkiti birds to registered farmers in the municipality, with 150 beneficiaries receiving between 20 and 50 chicks each in the first phase.
Speaking to Citi News on the sidelines of the exercise, the Municipal Chief Executive, George Kpakpo Allotey, said the birds had been brooded for about five weeks after their arrival and are now ready for release to individuals who registered and demonstrated capacity to rear them.
He indicated that a second batch will be ready within the next two weeks, after which additional beneficiaries will be invited to collect theirs.
George Allotey added that, the Assembly’s Agric Department will undertake follow-up monitoring to ensure proper care, while beneficiaries are being supported with feed and medication to sustain the initiative.
“Nkoko Nkitinkiti has really come to stay. Much more people should show interest,” he urged.
The programme forms part of efforts to promote backyard farming and strengthen local food production in line with the policy direction of President John Dramani Mahama.
