Administrator of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), Rashid Tanko-Computer, has defended his appointment to the role, pointing to his long-standing background in information technology and digitisation.

Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Friday, February 20, Tanko-Computer, who also serves as Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), said his selection to GIFEC was based on competence and experience.

According to him, President John Dramani Mahama was well aware of his expertise within the party and his capacity to contribute to the government’s reset agenda.

“We have a President who seems to know the capacity and expertise of every person he was working with at the time. We were at the election directorate and, therefore, dealing with issues of computers, connectivity, and technology matters. All this while, the President was watching us,” he said.

Tanko-Computer emphasised that his nickname reflects his professional background rather than mere political branding.

“I have worked with issues of digitisation and computers for a very long time. When I was in Tamale Teacher Training College, I was lecturing IT. I won the Best Teacher in IT in the Northern Region in 2007, came to national and won the Best IT Teacher for 2010. It is an area I have been working in. When people heard that I was called ‘computer’ they thought it was just a name. I have been doing the job for a very long time,” he said.

He maintained that his experience in IT and digital systems positions him to help drive GIFEC’s mandate of expanding electronic communications infrastructure and digital access across the country.
