Three persons have been arrested in the Wa West District after they were found each armed with a single-barreled gun and a cutlass, thereby posing a potential threat to public safety.
The suspects were apprehended during a routine patrol by officers of the Ghana Police Service at Goziri, a community near Vieri, on Monday, 3 February 2026. Police said the patrol team encountered about five men openly carrying weapons in the area.
On sighting the police vehicle, the men attempted to flee, but three of them were arrested after a brief pursuit. They were identified as Yahaya Samata, 27; Adams Alhassan, 37; and Yiritang Boosi, 35.
A search conducted at the scene led to the retrieval of three single-barrel guns, three cutlasses and twenty-three BB cartridges. During interrogation, the suspects admitted they did not have licences to possess the firearms and ammunition.
They were subsequently arraigned before the Wa Magistrate Court, presided over by His Worship Simon Kofi Bediako, and remanded into custody. The court directed them to reappear on 18 February 2026, while police continue efforts to arrest the remaining suspects who escaped.
The Upper West Regional Police Command has cautioned the public, especially individuals in possession of unlicensed firearms, to regularise their documentation or surrender the weapons in line with existing regulations.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace and security and urged residents to support law enforcement through cooperation and information sharing.
