The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GNCCI), Mark Badu Aboagye, has called for comprehensive reforms in Ghana’s tax and energy sectors to enhance the country’s competitiveness in the global export market.

Speaking at the 10th anniversary international conference of Ghana Export-Import Bank in Accra on Thursday, March 26, Mr. Badu Aboagye said Ghana’s export potential remains strong—particularly in manufacturing and value-added production—but is being constrained by high production costs.

He noted that several neighbouring countries continue to import building materials and plastics from external markets, including the United States, stressing that Ghana could position itself as a key supplier if existing production challenges are addressed.

Mr. Badu Aboagye further highlighted emerging sectors such as garments and vehicle assembly as promising medium- to long-term export opportunities, provided the right policy environment is created to support the growth of local industries.

However, he emphasised that the high cost of production remains a major setback, calling for urgent reforms in the energy sector to ensure a reliable, affordable, and efficient power supply for manufacturers.

He also argued that multiple taxes and levies on production and exports are driving up operational costs and undermining the competitiveness of Ghanaian businesses on the global market.

”Ghana’s energy reforms for me is very key to make energy available reliable and affordable to producers. In Ghana tax reforms is also very key so we have a number of producers and taxes when it comes to production and exports we should look at all these.”
