The former Member of Parliament for Tamale Central and former Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Inusah Fuseini, has revealed that the current number of available slots in the country’s security recruitment exercise was determined during negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
His disclosure follows comments by the Minister for the Interior, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, who indicated that more than 105,000 applicants have qualified for the medical stage of the ongoing recruitment despite only 5,000 positions being available for final enlistment.
The Interior Minister also disclosed that nearly 500,000 people applied for roles across the country’s security agencies.
Mr Fuseini made the remarks while discussing the controversy surrounding the recruitment process, suggesting that external economic considerations influenced the government’s decision to limit the intake.
Speaking on Newsfile on Saturday, March 14, he said the 5,000 recruitment cap was part of Ghana’s negotiations with the IMF.
“This 5,000 was negotiated during the engagement with the IMF,” he stated.
The former lawmaker also sought to reassure unsuccessful applicants, indicating that they could be considered in the next phase of recruitment.
Earlier, the Interior Minister, Mr Muntaka, urged applicants who may not be selected to remain patient, assuring them that the government intends to consider them in subsequent recruitment exercises.
He explained that additional opportunities are expected in 2026 when the country exits its IMF-supported programme.
“But the President has instructed that those who qualify and pass medicals, let’s keep their data. This is the first phase. The current recruitment is for 2025. Hopefully, when we are out of the IMF programme, we will conduct the 2026 recruitment and draw from the same pool of applicants,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Minority in Parliament has called on the Ministry of the Interior (Ghana) to refund approximately GH¢113 million collected from applicants who did not qualify in the recent security services recruitment exercise.
